John Temple, experienced publisher, editor and writer, has joined First Look Media as President, Audience and Products. Working directly with founder Pierre Omidyar, Temple will develop the best ways to serve audiences as well as oversee the company’s editorial vision.
Temple has spent the last year in residence at Stanford University as a senior fellow in the John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships program, focusing on design thinking as applied to journalism challenges. In 2010, Temple helped launch Omidyar’s first journalism start-up, Honolulu Civil Beat.
“As First Look continues to evolve and grow, John will bring a unique perspective that will enable further experimentation and exploration of product development and editorial direction to best connect with our audiences,” said Omidyar.
Throughout his career, Temple has created innovative ways for people to receive and engage with the news. As managing editor at the Washington Post, Temple was instrumental in combining traditional news with digital tools and platforms, bringing engineers into the newsroom to work side-by-side with journalists. He helped break new ground by creating digital offerings designed to inform voters and encourage them to interact, and share their election experience, nearly doubling the traffic to Washingtonpost.com over the 2008 election.
At the Rocky Mountain News—which earned four Pulitzer Prizes under Temple’s leadership as editor, president, and publisher—he pioneered citizen journalism, launching YourHub.com, a network of community websites where the public could post news they thought was important alongside stories from journalists. Temple also served as vice president/news of the newspaper division of the E.W. Scripps Co.
“I’m honored to join the talented team at First Look and help fulfill its important mission,” Temple said. “It’s a dream come true to be part of building a new media company committed to service and experimentation.”
Temple will be based in San Francisco. He started on Monday, June 9.
